Let me tell you a short story about the Scorpion and the Frog that can make you “think different”.
A scorpion lived in a dark and gloomy cave near a mountain. He got tired of his surroundings and he wanted a change.
One day, he came out of his cave and noticed that the valley across the river was very green. He crawled up to the riverbank and wondered how to cross it. Suddenly, he noticed a frog leaping around.
“Hello, Mr. Frog, would you carry me to the other side of the river?” the scorpion asked.
“I would have but you see I don’t trust scorpions, if I try to get you across the river, you will sting me to death along the way” Replied the Frog.
All scorpions are not bad and it doesn’t make any sense for me to sting you on the way. if I do, I will die for I do not know how to swim,” explained the scorpion.
Now the frog saw enough reason in the scorpion’s statement and agreed to carry him across the river.
So the scorpion hopped on to the frog’s back and they set out on the journey. The frog paddled his limbs through the water as fast as he could.
Half-way through the journey, he suddenly felt a sharp sting on his soft side and his legs got paralysed.
“Why did you sting me? Now both of us are going to die!” cried the Frog.
The unrepentant scorpion replied:
“What can I do?
I’m a Scorpion. It’s in my nature”
The frog and the scorpion immediately got drowned in the gushing water.
You see, the moral of the story is you shouldn’t trust anybody with your life or anything that’s important to you.
All around the world, most people are complaining about the tough economy. It’s even worse in Nigeria because we have no plan to absorb the effect of the sudden huge drop in oil price. Our major source of income.
Businesses are facing hard times of their lives. Salaries are not being paid regularly let alone raised. Prices are going up in the market.
Some companies are even folding up. Things are getting tough and tougher every single day. And there’s no hope the economy will get better any time soon.
Employees are blaming their employers. Employers and business owners are blaming it on the Government. The unemployed are also blaming it on the Government. The present Government is blaming it on the previous.
Everybody is pointing the finger of blame at someone. It’s a season of a blame game.
The reality is when there’s a blame, it means somebody has been trusted with an expectation.
Reflect on when the economy was not that tough as it is now. Whenever salaries were not raised or paid or businesses didn’t go as expected. There was still this similar kind of blame game.
There hasn’t been a period with no blame game. Somebody just has to be blamed.
The problem is not the Government. It’s not the price that’s going up. The problem is not the business owner, the entrepreneur or the investor that’s folding up the company and has to lay off workers.
Just like “the Scorpion”, it’s their nature to sting. It’s the nature of the Government and politicians to disappoint the citizens. It’s the nature of the employer to lay off or decide not to raise salaries. It’s the nature of economy to experience
It’s in the nature of the employer to lay off or decide not to raise salaries. It’s the nature of economy to experience a recession or being tough. It’s in the nature of businesses to fold up. And it’s in the nature of the job market to be tough.
Just as in the case of the Frog.
The problem is YOU.
You’ve trusted the Government, the employers, other peoples’ businesses, the job market and the economy with your job, business or career. You’ve trusted them with your means of livelihood.
You didn’t take control of what you can. No matter how tough the economy, you will never see some people complain or blame. They will even thrive better when the economy is bad because they’re in control of their own personal economy.
The way to get yourself out of complaints or the need to blame others in anything is to take control of what you can. The way to get yourself out of the economic mess is to be in control of your personal economy.
Being in control of your personal economy means if you’re an employee, you do not depend only on your salary as the major and only source of your income but you’re acquiring the right knowledge, skills and constantly taking the right actions that will transform you from salary dependent to multiple streams of profits dependent whether in your career or businesses.
If you’re self-employed or you own a business, being in control of your personal economy means you’re acquiring the right knowledge and skills to create multiple sources of profits in your business(es) and you can always make the right moves to turn or shift things in your favour whether the economy is good or bad.
That’s how to take control, bullet-proof yourself from the need to blame in any economy and even thrive better in an unfavourable economy because you can make always make the right moves.
While everyone is complaining and blaming the Government on the current Foreign Exchange rate(Forex), Aliko Dangote is thinking different. He’s thinking of how to be selling forex to the Central Bank of Nigeria.
You might not be the richest in Nigeria let alone Africa like Aliko Dangote because not everyone can and will be but you can take control of your personal economy to enjoy life and make impacts on your own terms with no cause to play the blame game.
